In the lower left field, a small ancient coin of Akragas bearing the image of a crab is shown, evoking the numismatic heritage of the city in antiquity. Agrigento's designation as Italy's Capital of Culture for 2025 came with some controversy — the city has long struggled with infrastructure deficits and bureaucratic delays that critics argued undermined the credibility of the selection. The Italian government has used the annual Capital of Culture program since 2015 partly as a mechanism to direct funding toward regions that would not otherwise attract cultural investment, making southern Sicilian cities like Agrigento recurring candidates.
The copper composition places this squarely in the collectible rather than circulating category, a format the Zecca has leaned on heavily for commemorative five-euro issues throughout the 2020s.
