Comments

The Frisian Currency Board is a private initiative promoting regional identity in Friesland, the northern Dutch province with its own recognized language. These notes have no legal tender status anywhere — they function as community exchange tokens, accepted only among willing participants in local schemes, and were never backed by any central banking authority.

Issued the same year the Netherlands was deep into eurozone membership, the gesture is explicitly political: a soft assertion of cultural distinctness rather than any serious monetary proposal.
