Portugal's Estado Novo government commissioned pattern coinage for Mozambique throughout the 1950s as part of broader monetary restructuring across its African territories. Whether these pieces were struck at the Casa da Moeda in Lisbon or submitted by outside die-makers as competing proposals has not been conclusively established for all varieties within the Gomes R E.04–06 sequence.

The .650 silver fineness is notably lower than the metropolitan Portuguese standard of the period, a deliberate colonial distinction.
