Mozambique's escudo coinage in the early 1970s was produced under the Portuguese Estado Novo regime even as FRELIMO's armed campaign, running since 1964, was steadily eroding Lisbon's control of the territory. Within three years of this issue's final date, the Carnation Revolution of April 1974 had ended the dictatorship, and Mozambique achieved independence in June 1975 — making this among the last colonial coinage types struck for the territory before the escudo was replaced entirely by the metical in 1980.
