Obverse description The Portuguese colonial coat of arms for Cape Verde occupies the central field, depicted as an armillary sphere overlaid with the Portuguese shield — the latter bearing five bezants arranged in a cross pattern and a bordure of castles. The shield is surmounted by a mural crown featuring towers and battlements. Two small floral ornaments flank the denomination at the base. The circular legend 'CABO VERDE' arcs along the upper periphery within a beaded border, while the denomination '5$00' is inscribed in large characters along the lower field.
