Obverse description Central device depicts the Portuguese royal arms superimposed upon an armillary sphere, the globe rendered with horizontal bands and encircled by meridian lines. The crowned shield of Portugal occupies the center of the sphere, surrounded by a mural crown at the top. The colonial territory name S.TOMÉ·E·PRÍNCIPE is inscribed in the upper legend along the periphery, while the denomination 5$00 appears in large numerals in the lower field. The entire design is bordered by a fine beaded inner rim.

Reverse description Central device features the Portuguese coat of arms — the traditional quinas shield with five escutcheons in cross formation, each bearing five bezants — superimposed upon an armillary sphere set on a cross of the Order of Christ. The sphere's meridian and latitudinal bands are clearly rendered, with the cross extending to the periphery of the design. The circular legend REPÚBLICA PORTUGUESA runs along the upper portion of the coin, separated from the inner field by a beaded border. The date 1951 appears in the lower exergual area, flanked by small decorative stops.
