Obverse description Central device depicts the Portuguese royal arms superimposed upon an armillary sphere, the globe rendered with horizontal bands and encircled by meridian lines. The crowned shield of Portugal occupies the center of the sphere, surrounded by a mural crown at the top. The colonial territory name S.TOMÉ·E·PRÍNCIPE is inscribed in the upper legend along the periphery, while the denomination 5$00 appears in large numerals in the lower field. The entire design is bordered by a fine beaded inner rim.
