5 Enteros Calaceite

Calaceite is a small agricultural village in the Matarraña comarca of Aragon, and this note is one of hundreds of hyper-local emergency emissions produced during the anarchist collectivization of the Spanish Civil War. When the CNT-FAI collectivized the local economy in 1936–37, conventional Republican currency became scarce and often distrusted; collectives issued their own scrip to facilitate internal exchange of goods and labor, denominated in units — "enteros" — that had no fixed relationship to the peseta.

The issuing body, the Colectividad de Productores, would have controlled local olive oil and almond production, the economic backbone of the Matarraña. Validation stamps served as the primary — often only — security measure, applied by hand to authorize individual notes.
