| 表面の説明 | A panoramic allegorical cityscape fills the field, depicting recognizable Viennese architectural landmarks including a Gothic spire reminiscent of St. Stephen's Cathedral, a Ferris wheel, a viaduct, and a steam locomotive, rendered in a stylized linear engraving style. To the lower left, a sailing vessel and water motifs are visible, evoking Austria's historical and cultural heritage. Twelve five-pointed stars arranged in an arc occupy the upper right of the field, referencing the European Community, with the date 1997 inscribed among them. The legend AUSTRIA arcs across the lower field, with the denomination 5 ECU inscribed along the bottom rim. |

Austria's ECU-denominated issues were never legal tender within the country — they were sold directly to collectors through the Austrian Mint's subscription program, timed to coincide with European monetary union discussions in the mid-1990s. The ECU itself ceased to exist as a unit of account on January 1, 1999, when it was replaced by the euro at parity, making the entire series immediately obsolete the moment the eurozone launched.
Schubert died in Vienna in 1828 at 31, leaving an extraordinary volume of work unpublished. The "Unfinished" Symphony had sat unknown in a drawer for over 40 years before its 1865 premiere.
