La Palma, the westernmost of the Canary Islands, erupted catastrophically in September 2021 when the Cumbre Vieja volcano began a 85-day eruption — the longest recorded on the island — destroying over 3,000 buildings and burying entire neighborhoods under meters of lava. This coin almost certainly commemorates that event or the island's recovery, though Spain has issued Canary Islands-themed pieces through its FNMT mint under various regional and cultural programs dating back to the peseta era.
The brass composition places it firmly in the non-circulating collector series rather than any emergency or regional monetary issue.
