Struck to commemorate Gustav II Adolf's coronation in 1617, this multiple ducat issue belongs to a tradition of Swedish presentation coinage that circulated almost exclusively among diplomats, foreign dignitaries, and court favorites — pieces given, not spent. Gustav's coronation itself was a carefully managed political event; the king was only twenty-two, already commanding armies against Russia, Denmark, and Poland simultaneously, and the ceremony was partly designed to consolidate domestic noble support for a reign that had begun under regency in 1611.
KM#31 is among the scarcer Swedish gold multiples of the early seventeenth century. Surviving examples are almost invariably in institutional collections.
