Additional information

Apafi's 1689 issues came near the very end of his effective reign — Ottoman power over Transylvania was collapsing under Habsburg military pressure, and by that year Apafi himself was little more than a nominal ruler holding a title the Porte could no longer protect. The Peace of Karlowitz was still a decade away, but Habsburg forces had already effectively controlled much of the principality since 1687.

Multi-ducat pieces from this reign are survival rarities. Struck in small numbers as presentation or diplomatic gifts rather than circulating currency, they saw no meaningful commerce. Huszár's catalog traces fewer than a handful of documented examples for this specific year.
