Joseph Ferdinand was born in October 1692 to Electoral Prince Maximilian II Emanuel and his wife Maria Antonia, daughter of Emperor Leopold I. That Habsburg lineage made the infant immediately significant: within months, he was being positioned as a claimant to the Spanish succession, and by 1698 the Treaty of the Hague named him heir to the Spanish throne. He died the following year, aged seven, collapsing the treaty and pushing Europe toward the War of the Spanish Succession.
