Leopold I issued multi-ducat pieces from the Tyrolean mint at Hall with unusual frequency during the 1690s, partly as presentation currency for diplomatic gifts and court ceremonial — these were not coins intended to circulate. The Hall mint had been striking gold multiples for the Habsburgs since the fifteenth century, and by Leopold's reign the tradition was as much political theater as monetary production.
KM#1338 is among the heavier five-ducat strikings from this period. Hall's gold work in the late seventeenth century was technically accomplished, and the .986 fineness reflects the near-pure standard maintained specifically for these prestige emissions.
