Leopold I held Tyrol as a separate hereditary territory distinct from his imperial holdings — the county issued its own coinage under its own authority, which is why Tyrolean ducats from this period carry regional rather than imperial mint attributions. The Hall mint, operating in the Inn Valley since 1477, struck the bulk of this output. Five-ducat pieces were not circulation coinage; they functioned as presentation gifts and diplomatic instruments, distributed at court ceremonies and to foreign dignitaries.
