Franz Anton von Harrach served as Prince-Archbishop of Salzburg from 1709 until his death in 1727, and the archbishopric's mint at this period was among the most technically accomplished in the Holy Roman Empire. Multi-ducat gold pieces of this type were not struck for circulation — they functioned as diplomatic gifts and presentation pieces distributed to imperial visitors, nobility, and ecclesiastical peers. Survival rates are accordingly low, as many were mounted, melted, or lost to estate dispersals across the 18th century.
Harrach came from one of the most powerful Bohemian noble families; his appointment to Salzburg was as much a political placement as a spiritual one. The Zöttl reference remains the authoritative catalog for Salzburg coinage, and examples traceable to documented presentation occasions command significant premiums.
