Additional information

Charles II of Liechtenstein-Kastelkorn held the Bishopric of Olomouc from 1664 until his death in 1695, presiding over a diocese still recovering from the devastation of the Thirty Years' War. Large gold multiples of this kind were not struck for commerce — they functioned as diplomatic gifts and presentation pieces, distributed to signal the Bishop's wealth and ecclesiastical authority to secular and clerical peers alike. Few changed hands more than once.
