The "Aureus Magnus" pieces were privately commissioned fantasy issues — not official Bundesrepublik coinage — produced by the Bavarian firm of B.H. Mayer's Kunstprägeanstalt in Pforzheim. They bear Theodor Heuss's likeness with his blessing, issued in the final months of his presidency, which ended in September 1959 when he became the only West German president to complete two full terms. Legal tender status was never assigned; they circulated exclusively among collectors and diplomatic gift markets.
