This piece was not a German federal issue in any conventional sense — it was struck by the private Hamburg firm of Henckel & Söhne as a fantasy medallic ducat series, trading on Olympic enthusiasm without official sanction. The "Aureus Magnus" designation was a commercial branding device, not a monetary classification. The 1960 Rome Games generated an unusually dense market for such commemorative gold, and several European private mints flooded collector channels with ducat-denominated pieces that had no legal tender status anywhere.
