Issued by the Bavarian State Mint in 1970 to mark the bicentennial of Beethoven's birth, this piece belongs to a wave of German gold issues produced under the "Aureus Magnus" program — a series of large-format gold medals and coin-like pieces that occupied a legal grey area between official coinage and bullion collectibles. They were not legal tender in the Federal Republic but were sold through official state mint channels, a distinction that mattered more to customs officials than to buyers.
The .980 fineness is notably purer than the standard .900 used in most contemporary German gold coinage.
