| Description de l’avers | The arms of Basel — a diagonal black bar on white (here rendered in relief) — displayed on an ornate oval shield at the center of the field, surrounded by an inner beaded circle and an elaborate wreath of foliate and acanthus scrollwork. Eight smaller oval shields, each bearing the arms of allied cantons or associated territories, are arranged symmetrically around the central device within the scrollwork border. The entire composition fills the field to the milled rim in the rich Baroque decorative style characteristic of early eighteenth-century Swiss municipal coinage. |
