Julius Caesar Gonzaga ruled Bozzolo as a virtually independent pocket lordship in the Po valley, but his coinage ambitions far exceeded the political weight of his tiny domain. The 5 Doppie was among the most ostentatious gold multiples produced by any of the minor Gonzaga branches — a deliberate statement of dynastic prestige from a ruler whose territory measured only a few square kilometers.
The extreme rarity reflected in its MB#1 / CNI IV#1 status suggests this was almost certainly a presentation piece rather than circulating currency. A coin of this weight in gold was worth more than most of Bozzolo's subjects earned in months.
