Palau has issued collector silver under its own authority since 1992, despite having no independent currency in circulation — the US dollar serves all domestic transactions. The Zugspitze issue is part of a long-running series pairing Palau's legal tender framework with European alpine and geographic subjects, a combination that makes commercial sense only in the German and Austrian collector markets where the mountain carries genuine national significance.
The Zugspitze, at 2,962 meters, sits on the German-Austrian border; its summit was first reached in 1820 by a Bavarian military surveying team.
