A classical Greek temple colonnade is visible in the lower left background. The border on the left and bottom is adorned with a continuous Greek meander (key) decorative pattern. The arc legend FROM ANCIENT TO MODERN SPORTS runs along the upper portion of the field, with the denomination $5 inscribed to the right and the date 2004 at the base.

Aanvullende informatie

Liberia's niobium sports series from the early 2000s was produced by the Austrian Mint under contract — the same facility responsible for Austria's own bimetallic niobium euros. The reactive metal produces its distinctive coloration through anodic oxidation, a controlled electrochemical process that varies the oxide layer thickness to generate specific hues without dyes or coatings.

Liberia had no domestic minting capacity and issued these under licensing arrangements common among smaller nations supplementing revenue through numismatic sales. Pure niobium coinage remains technically demanding; the 2004 wrestling piece was part of a broader Olympic-themed release timed to Athens.
