The Marshall Islands issued commemorative five-dollar pieces prolifically throughout the 1990s, targeting the collector market almost exclusively — few ever entered circulation. The 1994 FIFA World Cup was hosted jointly by nine American cities, the first time the tournament came to the United States, a country with no professional top-flight soccer league at the time. MLS launched the following year, partly as a condition of the U.S. bid.
