The Washington Monument spent nearly two decades as an unfinished stump after construction halted in 1854 when the Know-Nothing Party seized control of the Washington National Monument Society and inserted an unauthorized stone, causing Congress to withdraw funding. Work did not resume until 1879, which is why close examination of the actual obelisk reveals a visible change in marble tone roughly 150 feet up.
