Vanda Miss Joaquim, named after Agnes Joaquim who submitted the hybrid orchid for official recognition in 1893, was designated Singapore's national flower in 1981 partly for its resilience and year-round bloom — practical symbolism for a newly independent state building national identity from scratch.
