The USS Fanning and USS Nicholson share the distinction of sinking U-58 on November 17, 1917 — the first German submarine destroyed by American naval forces in World War I. The engagement occurred just months after the United States entered the war, and the coordinated depth-charge attack by the two destroyers marked a significant shift in Allied anti-submarine capability in the North Atlantic.
Marshall Islands commemorative issues of this period were produced primarily for the collector market, with negligible circulation on the islands themselves.
