The USS Arizona (BB-39) was sunk on December 7, 1941, during the attack on Pearl Harbor; of the 1,177 crew members killed aboard her, roughly 900 remain entombed within the wreck to this day. The U.S. Navy deliberately left the hull in place as a war grave, and the memorial structure built above it in 1962 deliberately does not touch the ship. Oil still seeps from the wreck at a rate of about one quart per day — a phenomenon sailors call "Black Tears."
