The Marshall Islands began issuing collectible coinage in 1986 under U.S. dollar parity, producing legal tender pieces through the Pobjoy Mint and others primarily for the philatelic and numismatic trade rather than domestic circulation. This Tornado F. MK 3 issue belongs to a run of aviation-themed five-dollar pieces the RMI produced throughout the 1990s targeting collector markets in the UK and Commonwealth countries — the Tornado being a natural choice given its joint development by Britain, West Germany, and Italy under the PANAVIA consortium, with the F. MK 3 variant entering RAF service as a dedicated air-defense interceptor in 1984.
