Obverse description Black intaglio print on red and light-green guilloche underprint. Engraved portrait vignettes of Dudley Dawson at left and Clifton H. Carlisle at right flank the central text panel bearing the bank title and promise-to-pay clause. Denomination numerals appear in the corners with ornate lathe-work surrounds, and the date "2nd JAN. 1935" is printed below the main legend.

Reverse description Uniformly printed in green, the reverse centres on a large intaglio cartographic vignette of Canada showing provincial boundaries, waterways, and geographic relief rendered in fine line-engraving. Ornate guilloche medallions enclosing the numeral "5" occupy the left and right flanks, with scroll-work corner pieces completing the frame. The bank title appears in a bold serif banner at the top, and "FIVE DOLLARS" is set in a matching panel at the foot, above the printer's imprint.
