Part of a twelve-coin series reproducing Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel ceiling in ultra-high relief, this issue was struck by the New Zealand Mint for Niue — a self-governing island territory in free association with New Zealand whose legal tender arrangements make it a favored vehicle for collectible bullion programs. The series was released to coincide with the 500th anniversary of the ceiling's completion in 1512.
The 80g format was chosen specifically to allow sufficient relief depth for the composition. Mintage was capped at 999 pieces worldwide.
