Palau has issued commemorative silver rounds under its own authority since 1992, despite having no meaningful domestic coin circulation — the U.S. dollar functions as its actual currency. The Temple of Heaven series belongs to a broader wave of Pacific island nation issues produced almost entirely for the collector market, with striking typically contracted to external mints.
The Temple of Heaven itself was completed in 1420 during the Yongle Emperor's reign and served as the site of annual imperial ceremonies where the Son of Heaven would petition for good harvests — a ritual performed without interruption for nearly five centuries until the fall of the Qing dynasty in 1912.
