Palau has issued commemorative silver in enormous volume since the late 1990s, much of it themed around UNESCO World Heritage Sites and ancient wonders — this piece falls into the latter category. The Seven Wonders series from this period was produced for the collector market almost exclusively, with distribution handled largely through European dealers rather than any domestic Palauan circulation network.
The original statue at Olympia, crafted by Pheidias around 435 BC, was reportedly dismantled and moved to Constantinople in late antiquity before being destroyed by fire — though ancient sources disagree on the details.
