Superimposed over the stripes in flowing script lettering are the words 'O say can you see', the opening words of the national anthem composed by Francis Scott Key. The surrounding legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA appears along the upper rim, with E PLURIBUS UNUM and FIVE DOLLARS separated by dots along the lower rim.
