The Standard Bank of Canada was a short-lived institution — chartered in 1873 and absorbed by the Canadian Bank of Commerce in 1928 — that operated primarily in Ontario. This 1891 issue predates Confederation-era consolidation pressures and reflects a period when dozens of chartered banks still exercised their own note-issuing authority under the Bank Act of 1871.

The American Bank Note Company in New York handled engraving and printing for a significant portion of Canadian chartered bank issues during this period, as domestic printing infrastructure capable of meeting security standards simply didn't exist yet in Canada. The ABNC's Canadian business was substantial enough that their New York plant maintained standing contracts with multiple competing Canadian institutions simultaneously.

Charlton reference BN#695-14-08 places this firmly within the 1891 dated series for the denomination.
