5 Dollars Seamen's Trade Vouchers. Baltona

Baltona (formally Przedsiębiorstwo Handlu Zagranicznego Baltona) operated a network of hard-currency shops aboard Polish merchant vessels and in select port facilities, supplying foreign sailors and Polish seamen with goods otherwise inaccessible through the state retail system. These vouchers functioned as an internal scrip — denominated in dollars but redeemable only within Baltona's own controlled outlets, keeping hard currency from leaking into the black market while still extracting value from it.

The 1973 series was issued during a period of significant expansion in Poland's merchant fleet under Gierek's industrialization drive. Baltona itself sat in an odd administrative space — nominally a foreign trade enterprise, practically a privileged enclave running on capitalist logic inside a centrally planned economy.
