Palau's marine-themed silver program, launched in 1992, was one of the earliest and most sustained Pacific island collector series to exploit the novelty of colored coin technology. The "School of Blue Fish" issue appeared as color printing on struck silver coinage was still technically inconsistent enough that quality varied noticeably between mintings — early Palauan colored pieces from this era frequently show color bleed or register shift under magnification.
