Nauru's micro-gold series, issued in partnership with European minting houses in the mid-2000s, produced coins like this one primarily for the collector market rather than any domestic monetary function — Nauru had no meaningful gold mining industry and a population under 10,000. The Scholl siblings, Hans and Sophie, were executed by guillotine in Munich on February 22, 1943, five days after distributing anti-Nazi leaflets at Ludwig Maximilian University.
Their inclusion on a Nauruan issue reflects the island's willingness to license virtually any subject with European collector appeal. The 0.5g format was a deliberate entry-level price point.
