Additional information

The Sack of Rome in 410 AD — carried out by Visigoths under Alaric — was the first time the city had fallen to a foreign enemy in roughly 800 years. Its psychological shock to the Roman world was immense; Jerome, writing from Bethlehem, reportedly wept upon hearing the news. Liberia has issued commemorative silver pieces under its own authority since the 1970s, functioning essentially as a collector bullion program with no meaningful domestic circulation.
