Puncak Trikora — also called Wilhelmina Peak — sits in the central highlands of Papua and was the focus of Indonesia's "Trikora" military campaign in 1961–62, in which Sukarno sought to wrest western New Guinea from Dutch control. The Netherlands ultimately ceded the territory in 1962 under UN-brokered pressure, with the United States quietly pushing the Dutch to concede rather than risk Indonesia drifting toward the Soviet bloc.
