Liberia's commemorative output in the 1990s was prolific to the point of absurdity — the country struck dozens of foreign-subject issues annually, most destined for the collector market rather than domestic circulation. This piece marks Diana's long association with Wales, where she held the title Princess of Wales from her 1981 marriage until its dissolution in 1996, just months before her death. The timing of this 1997 issue means it was almost certainly in production or already struck before the Paris crash in August of that year.
