Obverse description The national coat of arms of Liberia occupies the central field, depicting a sailing ship on the sea before a rising sun, with a palm tree and a plough in the foreground, all within a heraldic shield. A scroll above the shield bears the national motto THE LOVE OF LIBERTY BROUGHT US HERE, while a further scroll below reads REPUBLIC OF LIBERIA. The date 1997 flanks the shield at centre left and right, and the denomination 5 DOLLARS appears in the lower legend. The circular outer legend reads REPUBLIC OF LIBERIA, with a beaded border encircling the entire design.

Additional information

Liberia issued commemorative five-dollar pieces throughout the 1990s and early 2000s in large quantities, primarily targeting the international collector market rather than domestic circulation. These were produced by private minting contractors and exported almost entirely — most Liberians never handled one. Diana's death in August 1997 triggered an enormous wave of such issues from small-nation issuers, and Liberia was among the most prolific.

KM#450 is one of several Diana-themed Liberian pieces from that year alone.
