Beschrijving voorzijde The national coat of arms of Liberia is rendered in high relief at the centre of the field, depicting a sailing ship approaching a shore with a palm tree and a rising sun, surmounted by a scroll bearing the national motto 'THE LOVE OF LIBERTY BROUGHT US HERE'. The date '2003' is split to either side of the arms, with '20' at left and '03' at right. The legend 'REPUBLIC OF LIBERIA' arcs along the upper periphery, and a secondary inscription 'REPUBLIC OF LIBERIA' appears on a ribbon at the base of the arms. The coin features a beaded inner border and a reeded edge.

Aanvullende informatie

Liberia's commemorative coinage of the early 2000s was produced almost entirely for the collector export market, with essentially no domestic circulation. This piece was issued roughly two years before John Paul II's death in April 2005, during a period when the Vatican itself had no formal diplomatic relations with Liberia — making the choice of subject purely commercial rather than political.
