Palau has issued commemorative silver under its own authority since 1992, despite having no domestic mint and a population under 20,000 — the coins are produced entirely for the collector market and have never circulated. The Pamir range series reflects a broader Palauan strategy of licensing geographic and natural themes with no direct national connection, a practice that drew some criticism from numismatic purists in the mid-2000s.
The Pamir Mountains straddle Tajikistan, Afghanistan, Kyrgyzstan, and China — not a square meter of them within Palauan territory.
