Obverse description The coat of arms of the Republic of Palau is prominently displayed at center, featuring a shield with a figure of a traditional Palauan fisherman in a canoe as crest above, and the central device depicting a sea deity holding a trident accompanied by a mermaid amid ocean waves, with the motto RAINBOWS END inscribed in the lower portion of the shield. The shield is flanked by floral ornamentation and encircled by eight six-pointed stars arranged around the perimeter. The legend REPUBLIC OF PALAU arcs along the upper rim in Latin characters, while the denomination 5$ appears in the lower field. Two decorative curved flourishes frame the composition in the lower left and right fields.

Reverse description A finely detailed effigy of Our Lady of the Gate of Dawn (Ausros Vartai) is depicted in high relief at center, rendered in the style of the venerated icon housed in Vilnius, Lithuania. The Virgin Mary is shown in a frontal, devotional pose with hands crossed in prayer at her breast, her head slightly inclined and draped in a flowing veil and mantle. A radiant gilt halo of elongated rays surrounds her head and shoulders in gold-plated finish, contrasting dramatically with the frosted silver of her figure. The curved legend OUR LADY OF THE GATE OF DAWN arcs along the upper rim in Latin characters, and the date 2009 is inscribed in the lower exergue.
