Norman Manley's placement on Jamaican currency reflects his status as a National Hero — barrister, founder of the People's National Party in 1938, and the architect of Jamaica's push toward universal adult suffrage, achieved in 1944. The "small type" designation distinguishes this issue from the later KM#85.2 variant, where lettering dimensions were adjusted during the early 1980s as the Royal Mint refined the working dies. Jamaica was simultaneously grappling with IMF austerity negotiations during this window, and the five-dollar denomination saw heavier circulation pressure than the design had been engineered to sustain.
