Reverse description The reverse bears a finely detailed right-facing portrait bust of Norman W. Manley, Jamaican national hero and Premier from 1959 to 1962, rendered in high relief with naturalistic modeling of his facial features and hair. The legend 'NORMAN W. MANLEY - PREMIER' curves along the upper periphery, while the dates '1959-1962' appear in the lower right field. The portrait occupies the majority of the coin's field, with ample space left in the lower left quadrant. The overall design is clean and medallic in character, executed in the style typical of Franklin Mint commemorative issues.

Additional information

Norman Washington Manley, barrister and founder of the People's National Party, died in 1969 — five years before his face appeared on this coin. Jamaica's decision to issue a circulating five-dollar piece in his honor reflected the uneasy political balance of the 1970s, when the rival legacies of Manley and Alexander Bustamante (his cousin and political opponent) were both being absorbed into official national mythology. The denomination was substantial for everyday circulation, and these pieces saw genuine use rather than sitting in drawers.

The "large type" designation distinguishes this from a later reduced specification. KM#62 is the heavier, earlier production run.
