Norman Washington Manley, the Jamaican barrister and nationalist who founded the People's National Party in 1938, died in September 1969 — and this issue was struck two years later as part of Jamaica's early commemorative silver program following independence in 1962. The series gave the new nation an opportunity to define its own pantheon of founding figures on high-denomination coinage, a politically deliberate choice in the first decade of self-governance.
