Authorized under Public Law 116-97, this coin was issued to benefit the National Purple Heart Hall of Honor in New Windsor, New York — the site of the last encampment of the Continental Army and where Washington issued the original Badge of Military Merit in 1782, the direct predecessor to the Purple Heart. Surcharges from sales fund the Hall's operations and outreach programs.
The modern Purple Heart decoration itself wasn't revived until 1932, on the 200th anniversary of Washington's birth, largely through the advocacy of General Douglas MacArthur.
